Summer Travel Essentials: Stay Fresh On Your Journey
It’s that time of year again: summer travel. Whether your family is visiting relatives or vacationing abroad, keep these ten tips in mind to stay fresh during your adventures. We hope this quick travel essentials checklist inspires you before you’re on your way!
If you can already feel your mindset changing from perfectly content to completely frazzled, take a second. Breathe calmly. Play a meditation podcast. Listen to songs that make you feel good. Oftentimes, things won’t go according to plan or expectations—and that’s okay! The beauty of travel is sharing unforgettable moments with family and friends. This is an item on our travel essentials checklist that’s easily forgotten, but a fresh head will help you enjoy your experience all the more.
Baby and feminine wipes
Long-haul flights are no joke. After sitting in one place for more than a few hours, you’ll most likely start to feel like you’re stuck to the seat. If you’re dying to get off the plane and need a quick fix, feminine wipes are sure to do the trick. Just one wipe is all it takes to smell and feel fresh! Parasol femme-wipes are biodegradable and flushable, so it doesn’t matter whether you’re in the air or not; you’ll always be able to use these. We may be biased, but they’re definitely one of our favorite summer travel essentials! Your little may become antsy on the long journey, too—this is only natural. TSA-friendly hand soap
We’re all aware of the fact that airplanes and gas stations aren’t the cleanest places; thus, you’ll need to clean your hands more often than usual. Hand sanitizer only goes so far; while it kills bacteria, there’s this noticeable film left behind, which definitely won’t feel so great after a while. Feel extra clean by washing your hands with soap and water whenever possible, and always wash before eating. Your destination is sure to have delicious food—but what are you going to eat while you’re en route? When you’re scanning the airport cafes for a quick bite, it’s hard to tell whether the provided options will be fresh or not. Essentially, the “grab and go snacks” just won’t be the same as what you prepare at home. Keep in mind that you’ll need to bring an insulated container, but fresh snacks certainly will save you the trouble if you or the kids get a little hangry. Healthy snacks that travel well include unsalted nuts, firm fruits like apples, grain and seed crackers, cheese sticks, hummus, and fresh cut veggies. To prevent rushing, visit the grocery store a day or two before your trip to stock up.A good night’s rest—or not
This one is totally up to your discretion. Some sleep very well on planes or trains, while others, well, not so much. If you have a hard time sleeping in moving vehicles (or stationary vehicles for that matter), it’s best to prepare your body with enough rest a couple days before your trip. If waiting until you’re settled in works better for you, then book a red-eye and get your quick nap in. These tips work great on their own, but what if you’re bringing the kids? Try to schedule travel around the time that they’d be asleep. Lack of sleep only leads to irritation later, so make sure you get enough shut-eye!Water, your travel bestie
Drinking more water than you normally would ensures you can make it through anything, from unexpected flight delays to hours in traffic on the road. Bring an empty stainless-steel water bottle with you and fill it up once you’re through security. Driving with the fam? Make sure everybody has their own full bottle. If you can, a general rule of thumb is to drink one standard bottle every hour or two. We understand that stopping or pulling over to pee every half hour isn’t exactly ideal. Should that be the case, just stay away from dehydrating drinks like coffee and alcohol. You can save your latte for a treat upon your arrival. 😉Plenty of hydrating face and skin products
Speaking of hydration, your skin is going to need a little attention, especially when it comes to those longer adventures. Airplanes are known to hold little moisture, leaving your hands and face uncomfortably dry. Moisturize with your favorite face and hand lotions and double-check to make sure your toiletries are travel-friendly. One thing that deters people from packing their lotions is the thought that they’re going to spill. You’re good! Take a piece of plastic wrap, unscrew the cap off the lotion bottle, and lay it over the top of the bottle. Then, reseal the bottle. This way, your lotion is only going to go in one place (and we don’t mean all over your purse)! Not a fan of lotion? A facial mist hydrates your skin without exposing it to the airplane’s recycled air; we love the Evian and Mario Badescu sprays. You can also use a luxurious face oil to give your skin the nutrients and hydration it deserves.
An arsenal of exercises
Don’t stay put for too long. It may be hard to move when you’ve finally cozied up in your car or plane seat, but you’ll need to reduce your risk of blood clots. Do some stretches while you’re waiting to board. Break a sweat once you’ve landed and arrived at your hotel. Kids especially need to move, so they’re definitely going to be inclined to join you. There are so many exercises you can do while away—you just have to be creative; think walking lunges, squats, and climbing stairs.Do you have it all ready?
If there’s one golden rule for traveling, this is it. Leave the house with time to spare, and start filling your suitcase well in advance. Additionally, if you know your travels will take a while, pack a change of clothes in advance. Sometimes, switching outfits can truly make a difference—and yes, even swapping your socks will feel so much better.
